Cantor Ilana Wolpert earned her Master’s degree in Sacred Music and a cantorial investiture from the Hebrew Union College in New York in 1998. She served Congregation Bethaynu in Cleveland, Ohio through 2009. She has a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature and Linguistics from Tel Aviv University, and a Master’s degree and Ph.D. in English and American Literature from The Ohio State University.
Cantor Wolpert cherishes her role as the Ba’alat Kriah of B’nai Israel, and is proud of the congregation’s commitment to reading the entire Torah portion each Shabbat. She is passionate about teaching Hebrew, prayer skills, cantillation and Jewish literature at all levels, in both the synagogue world and in the community at large. As part of her involvement in many aspects of the congregational life of a large, dynamic synagogue, she has prepared many young people for their B’nai Mitzvah, has formed and assumed leadership of a new women’s group dedicated to education and relationship-building, leads daily minyanim several times a week, and High Holiday services, together with Rabbi Michael Safra, every year. She is married to Lawrence Wolpert, and they have two children, Maya, 26, and Oren, 22.
