Rosenbaum will discuss some of the key challenges and successes of his nearly 40-year career at the U.S. Department of Justice identifying, investigating, and prosecuting perpetrators of World War II Nazi crimes against Jews and others.

ELI ROSENBAUM is renowned for his distinguished career pursuing human rights violators, particularly WWII Nazi war criminals. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and the Harvard Law School, he began working in 1979 at USDOJ’s Office of Special Investigations, created that year to identify, investigate, and prosecute U.S.-resident Nazi criminals. Later named OSI’s Director, he led the unit in winning cases against over 100 Nazi perpetrators, earning OSI recognition as the world’s most successful and tenacious “Nazi-hunting” program. In 2022, after Russia invaded Ukraine, he was appointed to lead DOJ’s new War Crimes Accountability Team, to investigate and prosecute Russian war crimes. Rosenbaum’s awards include the Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service (DOJ’s highest award); Ukraine’s Order of Merit, conferred by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy; and the ADL’s “Heroes in Blue” award. He retired from DOJ in January 2024.
