For decades, everyday people have swam, lounged, and boated along American urban waterfronts for recreation. In this talk, we will explore the visual culture and social realities of Manhattan’s shoreline during the early twentieth century.

ATERET SULTAN-REISLER is the John Wilmerding Intern in American Art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. Working in the Department of Modern Prints & Drawings, she
prepares for the Elizabeth Catlett major exhibition planned for 2024-2025. Ateret recently received her MA in history of art and architecture from Boston University. Her research interests encompass social and environmental issues in nineteenth and twentieth century art of the United States.
