Sammy Spider & the Magic of Children’s Book Illustration with Katherine Kahn

Sunday, April 18, 2021 6 Iyyar 5781

8:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Experience the magic of the Sammy Spider series from the artist behind this adorable arachnid. The Sammy Spider series, by Sylvia Rouss, presents preschoolers with an engaging introduction to Jewish traditions, by taking the point of view of a spider living in the Shapiro family’s home. Katherine will talk about formative experiences in Israel that led her to become an illustrator of Jewish children’s books. She will also guide us through the pen and paint process of illustrating some of our favorite Jewish children’s book characters.

Presented by by the Arts Task Force of the Adult Education Committee.

KATHERINE KAHN’S first illustrated books were actually for television. Her program for WETA-TV’s Cover to Cover, A Wizard of Earthsea, won the Golden Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival in 1976. She has since illustrated over 50 (actual) books! Katherine received a BA from the University of Chicago in literature and art history and an MA in painting from the University of Iowa. It was during her time in Israel as a volunteer after the Six Day War
(1967–68) while studying at the Bezalel School of Art, that she determined to combine her love of Judaism and art. One of the ways she has done this is in her illustrations for Jewish children’s books. She is the illustrator of the Sammy Spider books, written by Sylvia Rouss, as well as the Ziz books, written by Jacqueline Jules.
