Social Action & Racial Justice Shabbat
Saturday, January 14, 2023 • 21 Tevet 5783
9:00 AM - 12:00 PMJoin us for Social Action Shabbat where we will honor our volunteers, and have an opportunity to learn more about the Scotland AME Zion Church Restoration project. The church, located on Seven Locks Road was nearly destroyed by a flood in 2019. However, the history of the Scotland AME Zion congregation and the Scotland Community goes back much farther and tells a story of the institutionalized inequities experienced by a community right here in our midst. Today, members of the Church and its allies in Montgomery County have launched the 2nd Century Project, a three-phase plan to reconstruct the building as well as undertake efforts to provide the community with financial sustainability for the future.
During services on January 14, we will hear from members of the Church, LaTisha Gasaway-Paul and Chuck Williams, campaign chair for the 2nd Century Project.
During Kiddush, we will have the opportunity to learn more with Paul Tukey, Director of Environmental Stewardship at Glenstone, who is deeply involved with the 2nd Century Project. Paul will speak about the historic relationship between the Jewish and Black communities as told in the context of Scotland’s history.
SAVE THE DATE for a community Juneteenth celebration on June 19, 2023, with more details to be announced.
