In 1656, Spinoza’s synagogue issued against him a writ of herem, expulsion from the community, for his “abominable heresies.” Join us for a dramatic reading of New Jerusalem, David Ives’ play which depicts this ordeal, and which will lead us to deeper investigation of Spinoza’s thought. Class participants will receive a copy of the play and will take turns playing the characters during each of the sessions.

The weekly reading and conversation about Spinoza will be facilitated by Daniel Spiro, local author and founder of the Washington D.C. Spinoza Society.

DANIEL SPIRO wears many hats. He is a practicing attorney who has devoted virtually his
entire career to investigating and litigating against corporate fraud. He coordinates the Washington Spinoza Society. In addition to serving as the President and a co-founder of the Jewish-Islamic Dialogue Society of Washington, he is active in other Jewish-Islamic partnerships in the D.C. area. He is the author of numerous essays and three published books, including Liberating the Holy Name and Moses the Heretic.
