The story of Joseph, the longest sustained narrative of the Torah, is something approaching a picaresque novel (or novella). The second-youngest son of Jacob, and his father’s favorite, Joseph undergoes adventure after adventure as he drifts from place to place and from one social milieu to another. By the time he has reached the high point of his journey, he has evolved into a true Jewish role model. We will do a very close reading of these chapters in Genesis.
