In recent months, our leadership has been exploring how B’nai Israel can provide a more welcoming membership experience for interfaith families. We have non-Jewish family members who help raise Jewish children, share in Jewish family life and traditions, and involve themselves in the community. It has become too limiting to define membership solely on the basis of Jewish status. We want to be welcoming, but we recognize that it is not simple. Traditional Judaism makes distinctions, and there are ritual functions that only Jews can perform.
We feel a responsibility as spiritual heirs to a sacred tradition to preserve the distinctiveness of Jewish identity. At the same time, we want all families who are pursuing a Jewish way of life to feel they have a home here at B’nai Israel. Please reserve your space at one of two opportunities for conversation.
We plan to create a safe space for honest and respectful dialogue to gain consensus around one of the most important issues of our time. Please join us!
