Starting with the earliest Israelite kings, we will explore the Bible’s honest criticism, skepticism and history of kingship and leadership. We will use a close reading of the biblical text to understand early Israelite history. Knowledge of Hebrew is always helpful, but not necessary—we will read in English with occasional references to the Hebrew to understand the story, idioms and choices of the translator. Any modern Hebrew-English Bible will work as our text for the class.
