Modern readers often discount the imaginative stories of the ancient Rabbis as “old wives tales.” But the word “midrash” simply means “study.” Close examination demonstrates just how insightful, creative, and consistent the Rabbis were in addressing inconsistencies within the biblical text. Beneath the surface of the various stories, one finds that ancient readers were disturbed by the very same questions that plague moderns. During this course, we will examine a series of midrashim on biblical stories in order to better understand the classical Rabbinic method of interpreting sacred text. Participants are encouraged to offer their own answers to these and other questions, creating their own modern midrash.
