I have been on a quest all of my life to find the synagogue of my dreams. Raised in a small, Reform congregation in Cleveland where, as a teenager, I called the organist “church lady” after the Dana Carvey character on Saturday Night Live, I kept obsessing about a bar mitzvah I had attended when I was nine years of age at the flagship Conservative congregation in town. It was there that I heard a real cantor for the first time. For years I searched, wondering where I might find such a synagogue again. I finally found it here at B’nai Israel.
Cantor Ilana Wolpert serves as Associate Hazzan at B’nai Israel Congregation. When she moves to Sacramento next fall to be near her two children—Maya, 31 (married to Steven), and Oren, 28—she hopes to get involved in the Conservative congregation there and volunteer at the UC Davis Medical Center’s Child Life Program.
