B’nai Israel offers many opportunities for donors to purchase plaques in celebration of lifecycle events or to memorialize their loved ones. A Simcha plaque on our Builder’s Wall or our Simcha board is intended to commemorate a happy event, such as a birth, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, a wedding, or an anniversary. Donors often purchase a Simcha plaque in advance so that it can be installed just prior to the event. A bronze yahrzeit plaque in the Shirley and Stanley Hayman Chapel, or a plexiglass plaque in the Chaim M. Uberman Memorial Alcove, are memorials to a deceased loved one. Donors typically wait until a year after the bereavement to make this purchase. Dedication of yahrzeit and memorial plaques takes place during a Yizkor service of the donor’s choosing following the installation of the plaque. Yahrzeit plaque donors receive yearly notification of the anniversary and a memorial light is lit next to the plaque throughout the month of the yahrzeit.
Please contact Allison Karasik (240-221-2507), to discuss your plans for a memorial or dedication plaque at B’nai Israel. We look forward to hearing from you.
“Over the past many years we have purchased bricks on the Builder’s Wall to celebrate the b’nai mitzvot of our children, followed by their weddings, and more recently the b’nai mitzvot of our grandchildren. All of us enjoy the great memories of these events when we see the “bricks” in the synagogue where all the events took place. We have also purchased plaques in the Uberman Memorial Alcove to memorialize our loved ones. With these plaques, needless to say, we are proud to have helped B’nai Israel remain the vibrant and caring synagogue we all know and love.”
