The Civil Calendar with Dr. Fred Messing
Sunday, Mar 1st 10:00a to 11:30aPeople sometimes prefer to observe yahrzeits in the “real calendar” rather than the Jewish calendar. The “real calendar”, more properly known as the civil calendar, changed multiple times over almost 3000 years to meet the needs of three tyrants and a pope. It now comprises months with nonsensical names and lengths. The civil calendar’s only virtues are that it aligns well with the seasons and is universally (almost) accepted. The Jewish calendar also aligns well with the seasons.
Staying Grounded in Unstable Times with Dr. Abby Adler Mandel
Sunday, Mar 15th 10:00a to 11:30aWe will discuss practical tools rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help us stay steady and connected during times of uncertainty. We will look at how our thoughts, emotions, and actions shape our resilience.
Yom HaShoah Candle Packing
Sunday, Mar 29th 10:00a to 12:00pLend a hand to pack candles that are mailed to all B’nai Israel community members. The yellow candle reminds us of the yellow star that Jews were forced to wear, identifying them as Jews and opening them to ridicule and persecution.
Tour of Loew Vineyards
Sunday, Apr 19th 1:00p to 2:30pWolf Loew, the last of his family, survived the Holocaust, first at Auschwitz then at the Flossenburg concentration camp. After liberation he made his way to the United States and eventually started a meadery in Mt. Airy, Maryland. His family started wine mead (also known as honey wine) production in 1870. We honor his life today with a visit to the vineyard—now one of only two certified kosher wineries in Maryland.
